A bit about Collagen

Today’s post is about collagen.

The health and beauty market is full of references to collagen, whether targeting joint health, better skin or stronger bones. We recently had a question about this protein from a friend who was trying to understand all the marketing hype. So, we have done some research and as always, we are sharing what we have discovered.

To start with, what is collagen?

It is the main structural protein in the large network of proteins and other molecules that surround, support, and give structure to cells and tissues in the body. As the main component of connective tissue, it is mostly found in connective tissue such as cartilage, bones, tendons, ligaments, and skin.

There are actually 28 types of collagens found in the body, however, it is Collagen type 1 that makes up more than 90% of the body’s collagen. Vitamin C is vital for it’s manufacture, while Vitamin E improves its production.

As human beings grow older, their synthesis of collagen decreases and the tissues will become thinner, weaker and less flexible.

Does ingesting collagen help?

One common misconception is that any ingested collagen forms the building blocks for collagen in the body. Studies have shown that only certain fragments – known as bioactive collagen peptides (BCP) – stimulate the body to produce more collagen in a target organ.

Bioactive peptides are formed by breaking down native collagen into smaller molecules. These smaller molecules are quickly digested by the body and can therefore enter the bloodstream.

Interestingly, Gelatine is a protein derived from the partial break down of collagen found in animal skin, tendon, and bones. Making it a potential bioactive collagen peptide.

Will diet help?

Eating foods that are high in collagen will also encourage your body to produce more of it. It is naturally present in various animal and plant products. Some of the best sources of collagen include: bone broth, fish (especially with edible bones and skin such as salmon and sardines) chicken, eggs, berries and citrus fruits. Interestingly, these foods are also high in vitamins C & E, which are essential for its production.

This brings us to supplements

According to study, for collagen peptides (BCP) that can be easily absorbed and used by our body, the most suitable type is one in powder or liquid form. When we ingest this type via food, it reaches the bloodstream that will be used by the body in a very short time. It has a high bioavailability and is therefore the better option.

A supplement in a tablet or capsule form has lower bioavailability than the others. They take longer to break down making it more difficult for the collagen in the capsule to be digested in our stomach and to completely enter the bloodstream. Capsules also have other disadvantages. Although it may seem easy to use, it can actually be misleading. Due to the fillers and coatings, you may need to swallow 10-20 of these capsules a day to get the daily amount of collagen you need.

When it comes to adding collagen to coffee, casseroles or soups, the biggest issue may be the influence of higher temperatures on the supplement’s quality. Proteins generally start to break down when exposed to high temperatures or acidic and alkaline solutions. At this time, the protein may no longer work properly, rendering the supplement ineffective. One research found that when collagen proteins were exposed to high temperatures, their initial breakdown occurred at 150 C (302 F).

As a result, as long as the temperature of your coffee, casserole or soup is below 150 C (302 F) when you add your collagen supplement, the powder’s quality should be unaffected.

The take away from this information

Collagen supplements are designed to protect the users’ skin, hair, nails and body tissues by stimulating production. Supplementing can increase lean muscle gain, decrease recovery time, rebuild damaged joint structure, and boost cardiovascular performance

As to which product to use, this is where reading the label comes into play. The product with the most collagen peptides per serve will provide the most benefit.

Fibre and Fibre Supplements

Today’s post is about fibre and fibre supplements.

Continuing on from our last post on stomach acid, today we will take a look at fibre.

What is fibre?

There are actually two forms that we can consume – soluble and insoluble.

Basically, one forms a gel like substance when mixed with water (soluble), chia seeds are an example of this. This soluble fibre helps to reduce cholesterol and fat absorption and improving glucose control, it also helps us to feel fuller helping with weight loss.

Insoluble fibre stays pretty much as it is eaten, all the way through the digestive process, an example of this is psyllium husk. This type provides bulk to the stool as well as helping to clean out the digestive system. It does this by acting as a sort of broom inside the digestive tract sweeping away things that are trying to cling to the sides.

Both types of fibre are an important part of a healthy diet and especially for digestion.

The two forms of fibre perform many tasks that are necessary to our overall health. They provide the balance between constipation and diarrhoea, they provide a food source for important bacteria in the digestive tract and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and some intestinal cancers. Fibre also slows the rate that sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream which keeps the blood glucose levels from rising too fast.

What about a fibre supplement?

Studies have found that only 5% of adults consume the recommended level of dietary fibre. So, for many, taking supplements can be a convenient way to improve part of their diet. There are easily available products like Metamucil or Benefiber that can help. However, these products don’t offer the same nutritional benefits of getting the fibre from food sources.

What about long-term use?

Is a supplement sustainable in the long term raises the question of why you are taking a fibre supplement in the first place.

As a Naturopath I feel that the reasons for continued use of a fibre supplement should be explored. There may be other issues to consider and if they are not addressed then more health concerns could occur. Therefore, it is more important to ascertain what that underlying problem may be.

It could quite simply be that there are gaps in the diet not providing enough of the right type of fibre. In this case the simple answer is small changes to your diet to include more. This means including things like fruits, beans, whole grains and vegetables into your diet in greater amounts and preferably unprocessed.

Of course, it is possible to get too much of a good thing and fibre is no exception. Too much fibre can lead to bloating and excessive gas and no-one wants that. As with all things, there is a balancing act going on inside the body at all times.

So, if you think you have an issue with too much or too little fibre then see your health professional.

A condition called Pyrrole Disorder

Hello all Scott here again.

Following on from my last post I thought I would talk about something called “Pyrrole disorder” or Pyroluria.

So what is pyrrole disorder?

Pyroluria, or pyrrole disorder, is a condition caused by stress. It develops when there are too many pyrrole molecules in your body.

Hydroxyhemopyrrolin-2-one (HPL) is a molecule naturally excreted via urine. Some people may excrete more HPL (pyrroles) than others. Previously called elevated HPL, this condition is now known as pyrrole disorder.

Pyrrole molecules don’t serve any important function in the body. However, an excessive amount can deplete the body of certain vitamins and minerals before they are able to be absorbed.

This means that these nutrients, mostly zinc and B6, become depleted in the body. This in turn leads to an excess of copper because copper and zinc are linked and the levels of one affect the other.

The result of this is noticeable shifts in mood.

Pyrrole disorder has been known to have symptoms including anxiety, depression and even schizophrenia.

How is it diagnosed?

The condition has many and varied signs and symptoms, making it impossible to diagnose from history and observation alone. It is often mistaken for bipolar disorder. This is due to the variations of mood changes, which can range from mania to depression over a period of weeks.

There is also pathology testing which includes a urine assessment called a kryptopyrrole test. This test identifies how many HPL molecules you have in your body. An excessive amount may indicate pyrrole disorder.

What are some common symptoms?

This disorder is thought to affect around 10% of the population with the most likely cause being genetics.

Common symptoms include –

  • sensitivity to light or sound
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • mood swings / a propensity to anger easily for insufficient reason
  • memory loss / poor short-term memory
  • feelings of anxiety / depression
  • Insomnia / fatigue

The severity of symptoms can be affected by stressful or traumatic situations and/or poor diet as well as allergies.

How is it treated?

Research on this subject is still ongoing and new things are being discovered about it all the time.

At this stage there appears to be no cure as such for Pyrrole disorder. However, given the role of HPL molecules in removing vitamin B6 and zinc from the body, it has been found that supplementing these micronutrients can help treat pyrrole disorder.

Most therapies focus on a holistic approach that addresses nutrition, stress, and lifestyle.
